As the daughter of the murder victim featured in this book, I am extremely proud of how Elly Stevens presented only the factual account of what truly happened. She skillfully based her work on transcripts, depositions, newspaper articles, and insights from the two surviving family members.

As one of the children in the film, I thank Elly for shedding light on the murder of Jon Pownall. My heart raced from the beginning to the end of the book. Her attention to the facts and details of Jon’s murder will bring readers back to 1973 on a ride with many twists and turns. This work finally brings closure and honors his family, life, and legacy. “Rest in peace, Jon, your story has been told.”

My brother recommended this book to me. He was a member of the Portland Police Department throughout, even participating in some of the investigation. Read it in one day and finished it with so many thoughts and what ifs, which really has affected me. I don’t think I’ve ever finished a book and just wanted to be still and consider the whole thing. The book doesn’t read like a novel. More, it’s like a report. I appreciated that considering the story is true. Well documented and organized.

GOODBYE FAT LARRY presents us with us with a riveting step by step account in how to discover the truth of an unsolved murder by way of a legal and psychological autopsy. The author uses a mixture of interviews, transcript reviews, newspaper accounts, legal findings and legal machinations to present the reader with enough information to formulate his or her own opinions about what actually happened to the murder victim. But don’t look for judicious decisions to help finding the ultimate truth as in this and many other cases , true justice remains elusive, frustrating and sadly the American way.

Immediately after cracking open the book, I was captivated by the opening statement from Tom Pownall, followed by Elly and Larry’s introductions, which connect them directly to the story of Jon Pownall. I like how Elly organized this book, breaking it down into several sections to help frame the events and illustrate the story. I enjoyed her writing style; I think she did an excellent job of describing the events in an artful and engaging way. A tremendous amount of research went into this book, and it became more evident as I progressed through the pages.

I like true crime but don’t normally gravitate to the written story. This book captured my attention immediately and I could feel myself back in time and could see it playing out in my head. The book is so well written and researched that you feel you know the individuals. Actually, I knew his wife from Pennwalt Pharmaceuticals and found her to be a nice person. I feel a sadness that I didn’t know this story when I knew her. I highly recommend this book!

I really thought that this was well done! I like the way the book was laid out and often found myself referencing the “List of Chief Actors” to make sure I knew who was whom.

Meticulously researched and written, this book sheds new light on a classic New England cold case sure to interest true-crime enthusiasts and anyone who loves a good mystery.

I highly recommend this fast paced true crime book. Elly Stevens has a fluid writing style that kept me guessing as to whether my assumptions were correct on the outcome of the murder. The author obviously did a great deal of research and included summaries of the people involved and their connections.
